In 1987 Esther Kroon enrolled in a portrait photography course at the Amsterdam Centre for Photography, where she was taught by photographer Rineke Dijkstra. Afterwards, she decided to break off her education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts to become Dijkstra's personal assistant.
